There are several secret societies all over the world that have long been dubbed and shrouded in many conspiracies, theories, and many assumptions, facts, and fictions. The Illuminati is basically one such secret society and in fact one of the most popular of them all. Dating back to historical times, the Illuminati secret society was founded by the renowned Professor Adam Weishaupt in Bavaria on May 1st, 1776, to be precise. Professor Weishaupt, enveloped and absorbed in the power of the conservative Catholic Church along with the Bavarian monarchy, personally sought to cast aside organized religion in favor of an entirely new form of enlightenment made possible through valid reason.
Having been particularly inspired by the widespread spread of the general Enlightenment throughout Europe, he also came across varied ideas that were expressed quite categorically by the Jesuits, the endless hymnal mysteries of the Seven distinguished Sages of Memphis, the Kabbalah, as well as the Freemasons. He was quite included and recruited into the latter group, later infiltrating Masonic lodges in his quest to seek out and recruit some of the world’s wealthiest and most influential men throughout the European nation.
Several members of the Bavarian Illuminati, who were commonly known as the Perfectibilities, were categorically divided into 3 tiers of increasing power, as well as those drawn from the social elites, including nobles, such as former Freemason legend and Baron von Knigge, along with Johann

Adam Weishaupt
It was on May 1, 1776, that Adam Weishaupt, a law professor at the University of Ingolstadt, founded the Illuminati, a secret organization formed to oppose religious influence in society and the abuse of power by the state by providing a safe space for criticism, debate, and freedom of expression. Inspired by the Freemasons and French Enlightenment philosophers, Weishaupt believed that society should no longer be dictated by religious virtues; instead, he wanted to create a state of freedom and moral equality where knowledge was not restricted by religious prejudices. However, religious and political conservatism prevailed in Ingolstadt at the time, and the subjects taught at the Jesuit-controlled university where Weishaupt taught were strictly monitored.
After initially handpicking his five most talented law students to join, the network expanded rapidly, its members spreading Weishaupt’s enlightenment goals with radical teachings, while also creating an elaborate network of informants who reported on the behavior of state and religious figures in an effort to build a wealth of information that the Illuminati could potentially exploit in their teachings. With the help of prominent German diplomat Baron Adolf Franz Friedrich, Freiherr von
Knigge, who helped recruit Masonic lodges to the Illuminati cause – the clandestine group grew to over 2,000 members throughout Bavaria, France, Hungary, Italy and Poland, among other places.
But in the city where it all began, this peculiar legacy remains little known among residents.
The organization did not elude the establishment for long, however. Just a decade after its creation, the secret society was infiltrated by the Bavarian authorities after its radical anti-state writings were intercepted by government authorities. The Illuminati was shut down, and Weishaupt was banished from Ingolstadt to live out the rest of his life in the German city of Gotha, 300 km to the north.
Yet the idea of a secret society rebelling against the state has captured the imagination ever since, encapsulated in conspiracy theories by those who believe the Illuminati was never actually disbanded, a claim that has been widely debunked by historians. Even so, conspiracy theorists say the organization has been working secretly behind the scenes to subvert authority. Weishaupt was, in many ways, a revolutionary, Klarner continued. “He liked the idea of teaching people how to be better in society. He wanted to change society, he dreamed of a better world, a better government. He started the Illuminati with the idea that everything that is known to humanity should be taught—something that was not allowed here at the university.”
